Everybody Reads launches “Parent & Child Book Club”

Chris Singer

Everybody Reads is offering a great new book club geared towards building both a lifelong connection with reading and a personal connection between a parent and their child.

The “Parent & Child Book Club” is kicking off with its first selection, “A Little Piece of Ground.”  Written by Elizabeth Laird, one of UK’s best known young adult authors, “A Little Piece of Ground” is one boy’s telling of the human cost of the occupation of Palestinian lands.  Twelve year-old Karim Aboudi and his family are trapped in their Ramallah home by a strict curfew.  Karim, stuck at home with his teenage brother and fearful parents, longs to play soccer with his friends.  When the curfew ends, he and his friend discover an unused patch of ground that’s the perfect site for a soccer field.  However, in this city, there’s constant danger, even for school children.  And when Israeli soldiers find Karim outside during the next curfew, it seems impossible that he will survive.

“A Little Piece of Ground” is appropriate for any parent and their youth in grades 6 and up.  The book club will meet on Wednesday, July 25th from 7 to 9 p.m.   A discussion of the book will take place followed by a panel discussion with local experts on the Israeli-Palestine conflict.

Copies are available right now at Everybody Reads.  To get your copy, stop in to our store on 2019 E. Michigan Ave. (right next to Gone Wired).  For more information or to RSVP for the club, please call (517) 346-9900.

Everybody Reads values its role as a community resource center disguised as a bookstore!  Besides a calendar of events and various features on books and local authors, our website (www.becauseeverybodyreads.com) offers links to some of the many resources available in the Lansing area.  During the month of June, stop in to see our display honoring the work of the Women’s Resource Center.  Along with the display is a wealth of books and resources relating to women’s issues

Please feel free to contact us with ANY questions!
